Baker Passes Bill to Add Reading Specialists to OK Elementary Schools

Sanders Passes Dyslexia Bills in House
House Majority Leader Mike Sanders (R-Kingfisher) today passed two bills addressing the needs of students with dyslexia in the House of Representatives. ?House Bill 2804 would require screening for dyslexia for kindergarten through third-grade students not reading on grade level beginning in the 2022-23 school year. House Bill 2889 makes the State Department of Education responsible for updating the Dyslexia Handbook annually.

Volunteer Firefighter Numbers Continue to Grow with Changes to Laws
House Majority Leader Mike Sanders (R-Kingfisher) said close to 500 new volunteer firefighters have joined rural fire departments four years after he successfully ran legislation that eliminated the age limit for new volunteers. He expects to see an even greater increase with the passage of another law that takes effect today.

The Senate today passed a bill authored by House Majority Leader Mike Sanders, R-Kingfisher, that will add professional development training for teachers to help them better recognize students with dyslexia and get them needed educational supports. The bill now moves to the governor’s desk to await being signed into law.
