Bill to increase transparency from state agencies fails to advance committee
OKLAHOMA CITY – HB 1943 by Rep. Michelle McCane, D-Tulsa, failed to advance out of the General Government Committee and now remains property of the committee.
The bill would require state agencies to maintain plain writing in all covered documents produced by the agency.
“This bill would allow the general public to comprehend writing from state agencies better by requiring plain writing from these agencies,” McCane said. “I appreciate the chair and the members of the General Government Committee for hearing this bill, though it did not pass. Measures such as this one are meant to increase transparency from state agencies, and I will continue to advocate for Oklahomans to have more accountability from their tax-funded services. Transparency is a value shared by our Governor and representatives on both sides of the aisle, so I am hopeful this measure or one like it still has a path to get to the Governor’s desk.”
When a bill does not advance out of a committee, it becomes property of the committee. This means that it can be taken up by the committee anytime while policy is still being considered.
The final day for policy to be considered in committee for the 60th Oklahoma Legislature is Monday, Feb. 24.
